Tesco tests auto checkout stores in the UK

Tesco, a British supermarket, opened its first automatic checkout free store in central London. Customers can shop and pay without scanning products or using the checkout function. Before Tesco took this measure, competitors including Amazon made a similar attempt. In early 2021, Amazon opened its first physical store in the UK. Combined with its own just walk out technology, it identified which customer took what goods from the shelf through smart phones, cameras, sensors, RFID and other devices, automatically checked out when the customer left the store and deducted money from his Amazon account.

"Getgo" store is Tesco's countermeasure against Amazon, the largest retailer in the UK. Tesco said that after customers using Tesco app check in the store for the first time, they only need to take what they want to buy instead of going to the cashier. The combination scheme of camera and weight sensor will automatically determine what customers have purchased and charge them directly through the app when they leave the store. Customers will receive an electronic receipt on their mobile phone within minutes of leaving the store. In addition, the store also has a special area for age limited products, and is equipped with a separate exit where staff will manually check their identity for verification.

As the first public getgo store launched by Tesco, this new technology will create a more convenient shopping experience for customers and save time for those who want to buy goods on their way home. Kevin Tindall, general manager of Tesco convenience, said: "Tesco continues to strive to improve the shopping experience. This innovation provides non payment checkout for customers with time constraints to help them save more time. Through the current single store test and subsequent store test, we will be able to further understand the response and acceptance of general customers.
